Forms of Integration of the Northwestern Region in the Views of the Local ProRussian Oriented Public in the First Half of the 1860s

Purpose. Powerful patriotic upsurge and ideological division in Russian society during the January Uprising of 1863 – 1864.
led to the formation of pro-Russian sentiments among the regional public and the intensifi cation of its intellectual activity. The subject of the article's research is the views of loyalists in the northwestern provinces and the non-conflict forms of integration of the region into the Russian Empire in the fi rst half of the 1860s presented in them.
Methods. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study was made up of methods of problem-oriented intellectual history, which make it possible to identify the pro-Russian public of the North-Western Territory as a separate socio-cultural group and to consider the interests and ideals of its representatives in the specifi c historical socio-cultural context of the first half of the 1860s.
Results. In the fi rst half of the 1860s. Loyalists of the North-Western Territory identifi ed among the most eff ective forms of integration of the region into the Russian Empire: the spread of Russian-language toponymy, the development of Russian-language education and the spread of the Russian language, including through the activities of educational societies, while simultaneously encouraging the development of the language and culture of local non-dominated ethnic groups.
