Infi nitive and Grammatical Metaphor in M.A. Bulgakov's Novel "The Master and Margarita"
This article is devoted to the analysis of the specifics of the infi nitive functioning, when morphological transposition acts as a carrier of the semantics of the imperative, in M.A. Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita". In this text morphological transposition of the infi nitive is the basis for the emergence of grammatical metaphor, the main purpose of which is to create imagery, expressiveness.
The transposable infi nitive acts as a bright means of creating images of characters, their characterisation in the novel. Examples of grammatical metaphor based on infi nitive transposition occur only in dialogues or in the internal speech of the characters, i.e. they belong to the character's plan, not to the author-narrator's plan.
The analyzed cases of grammatical metaphor associated with the use of infi nitive in the meaning of imperative in M.A. Bulgakov's novel serve as a means of representation of the category of emotiveness. However, we see a much more important function of the infi nitive in the text of the novel as its participation in the creation of such a stylistic fi gure as antithesis.
