The Modern Ethnic Structure of Municipalities in the South of Russia: Typological Invariance
The correct formulation and eff ective solution of the multidimensional tasks of the spatial development of modern Russia are associated with detailed consideration of the peculiarities of the ethnic structure of territories. The account of ethnoterritorial diff erentiation at the grassroots, municipal level of the spatial organization of Russian society has been updated in a special way. Based on the analysis of data from the All-Russian Population Census of 2020–2021, the article reveals the peculiarities of the ethnic structure in all municipalities of Southern Russia (81 urban districts, 244 municipal districts and 16 municipal districts).
An approach to the typologization of the ethnic structure of the population is proposed. Based on it, 239 mono-ethnic (167 of them with a numerical predominance of Russians) and 102 multi–ethnic municipalities were identifi ed within the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts. The analysis made it possible to emphasize: the regional conditionality of polyethnicity (the nature of
the ethnic structure, including the predestination of the "second – third" ethnic group), the phenomenon of "background polyethnicity" (universal, taking place even in mono-ethnic municipalities), the impact on the ethnic structure of the intermunicipality of the areas of settlement of individual ethnic groups (Nogais, Turks, etc.), as well as the factor of geographical proximity (Kazakhs,
Azerbaijanis)). The features of localization of the main types and subtypes of ethnic structure are revealed: arrays of municipalities with a specifically homogeneous ethnic structure, their stripes, clusters, inclusions.
