Regional Practices of Perpetualizing the Memory of the Battles on the Mius Front in 1941–1943

( Federal Research Center Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences)

This paper examines traditional and modern forms of perpetuating the memory of the battles on the Mius Front in 1941–1943. The author limits himself to analyzing certain forms of preserving memory: memorial, museum, search practices and militaryhistorical reconstructions. As part of the comparative analysis, it is concluded that these forms of historical memory play a major role in involving society in the memorialization process, and a common worldview on past events is developed between the authorities and society. It is proved that a noticeable activation of traditional practices of preserving memory occurs 20 years after the end of the Great Patriotic War. The emergence of the military-historical reconstruction movement and the development of the search movement raised a new round of patriotism after the decline in the pace of memorialization in the 1990s. Nowadays, these forms of perpetuating memory in the Rostov Region are becoming the leading guidelines in the civil identity of the individual. Opened in
2020, the Sambek Heights People's Museum Military-Historical Complex has become the central place for the reburial of Soviet soldiers and a venue for annual military-historical reconstructions in Primiusye. This combination of traditional and interactive approaches to conveying historical information is becoming a popular form of perpetuating the memory of past battles on the Mius Front in 1941–1943.
