Functional and Grammatical Characteristics of the Semantic Field «Burning» as a Basis for Its Study in a Foreign Audience

(International Institute of Interdisciplinary Education and Ibero-American Studies, Southern Federal University)

The semantic fi eld «Burning» in Russian is considered in the work. The purpose of the work is to present the described material not so much from the standpoint of the traditional systematic approach, but primarily from the point of view of functional grammar, in the light of the speaker's pragmatic attitudes in the specific discursive use of units of this semantic fi eld. From the point of view of practical grammar, it seems advisable to divide the units into 3 groups – the substantives denoting fi re, the verbs denoting burning process, and the rest of the vocabulary (the periphery of the fi eld). When considering the nominative core, such factors as
the syntactic and stylistic functions of the word, the type of meaning: direct or figurative, become important. For the verbs that make up the core of the field, the following functional and semantic categories are important: limitation, tendentiousness and controllability. Understanding the functional features of the lexical and grammatical semantics of the units under consideration is important for
intercultural communication and learning a foreign language, when different grammatical means are used in diff erent languages to
perform the same functions in speech (with similar pragmatic attitudes and intentions of the speaker).
