Geographical Terms for the Designation of Adyghe Homonyms in Russian and Adyghe Languages

(Adygea Republic Research Institute for the Humanities named after T.M. Kerashev)

The article, based on a review of scientific works (Sultan of Crimea-Giray, V.P. Kobychev, E.L. Kodjesau, I.H. Kolmykov, N.R. Ivanokov, N.H. Emykova, S.H. Hotko), national bilingual dictionaries and texts of Nart legends, identifi es geographical names of Adyghe rural settlements used in Russian and the Adyghe languages. It is noted that the homonyms of the Adyghe languages can be divided into borrowed and native ones.
The geographical names of Adyghe rural settlements used in Russian as stanitsa, settlement, and khutor are borrowed from the Adyghe languages. They have undergone some phonetic changes in the process of adaptation: stanitsa, village, kutyr. And the terms village and aul are matched by the similar Adyghe terms kuaj/kuaje, chyleh/zhyleh. According to the author, it would be more correct to nominate Adyghe rural settlements in the Russian language with the native Adyghe term kuaj/kuage, rather than the term aul, which is alien to the Adyghe ethnic group.
Based on the analysis of the factual material of the "Electronic Adyghe Corps", statistical calculations are carried out in order to distinguish the terms kuaj/kuaje and chyleh/zhyleh. It is established that the former is more commonly used for the geographical designation of a rural locality, the latter in the meaning of "society", "people".
