Retrospective of the Development of Female Monasticism and its Liquidation during the 1920–1930s in the Don Region

Based on sources not introduced into scientific circulation, the institute of female monasticism in the Don region of the early 20th century and the results of its liquidation after 1920 are analyzed.
The methodological basis of the study is formed on the principles of scientific objectivity, systematicity and historicism traditional for historical science.
It is revealed that the legislation that changed in the 1917–1930s led to the abolition of monasteries and the transfer of their property to the state, which caused a series of local conflicts with local authorities and arrests of monastery leadership.
It is concluded that the repressive policy towards female monasticism in the Don region was relatively mild - in the overwhelming majority of cases, convicted nuns were sent to the Northern Territory.
