The Modern Education in a “Melting Pot” of Globalization
Purpose: The article analyzes the dialectic of tradition and innovation in contemporary culture, characterized by the increasing globalization trends. Based on the analysis the author discusses the problem of spreading the problematization method in education and the possibility and limits of postmodernism in the teaching process. The article follows the discussion of the world social thinking on the formation of the unifi ed global culture and the role of
tradition in the modern cultural development of the humanity.
Methods: Using the elements of the historical analysis, the author reveals deep historical roots of modern globalization trends, showing that the dialectical interaction of tradition and innovation is the source of the cultural development, including the modern world. Among the applied methods, there is a comparative analysis of different approaches to the understanding of globalization and its results, of the assessments of the role of the classical
modernization paradigm in social development, of views on the role of post-modernism in the formation of the creative personality.
Results: The research shows that the current social and cultural development is an objective process in which there is dialectical interaction of the opposite tendencies and phenomena such as globalization and localization, tradition and innovation, unifi cation and diversity. Innovation must take into account and be based on deep knowledge of cultural traditions rather than be in opposition to them. Thus, the task of education is to develop a person with creative abilities who not only knows the tradition, but also is able to develop it. The concept of the creative person, capable of generating new cultural values based on the tradition, and the concept of a person who problematizes existing cultural values are not equal. Knowing the traditions, cultural values is a necessary element of the educational process, and therefore, the role of the method of problematization and ideas of postmodernism in education should not be overemphasized.
Discussion: Based on the overall assessment of the social and cultural features of the process, the author enters into polemics with the supporters of wide application of the method of problematization of the cultural tradition in education and the promotion of the postmodernism ideas.
