Food Security for Urban Residents of the Stavropol Region during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945

Purpose: the purpose of our work is the consideration of the question of food in Stavropol region during the great Patriotic war. Special attention is paid to the study of these issues during the occupation of the region by the invaders.
Methods: our study is based on analysis of documentary information: business documents of that time, memories of the inhabitants of the province, eyewitnesses of those events. Description is based also on the analysis of the periodicals of the times of the great Patriotic war.
Results: as a result of our study the following conclusions were made: in the first days of the great Patriotic war in all regions of the Soviet Union, including in the Stavropol region, began restructuring the food supply of the population. It was caused by the need to ensure the soldiers of the red Army all the necessary list and quantity of food. Moreover, this task for the period of wartime became paramount importance. However, the Soviet government would simultaneously solve the problem of providing the urban population with a minimum set of food products. Its implementation was associated with the introduction of the card system in the cities of the USSR. In the Stavropol region, it was put into effect from the beginning of September 1941 at 10 cities in the region. The practice of military years have convincingly demonstrated the feasibility and success of such measures normalized distribution of food among all categories of urban dwellers. As a result, out of this crisis allowed a number of measures undertaken by the provincial and municipal authorities of the region with the support of the Soviet government. For example, the supply of food in the city territory of centralized funds, the decline of the food supply from the Stavropol territory in the state Fund, food aid to the rural workers of Stavropol city dwellers.
