P.P. Svin’in and Translation of the History of the Peoples of the North Caucasus on the Pages of «Otechestvennye Zapiski» (1818–1838)

In the periodicals of imperial Russia of the 19th century a special role was played the «thick» journals, among which was the journal «Otechestvennye zapiski». The journal’s edition published numerous materials about the daily life of the mountaineers, their traditions and customs, and the policy of the government in the region. The array of these materials is an invaluable corpus of historical sources, which makes it possible to significantly expand the source of scientific research.
The publication of a variety material about the population of the region, the accentuation the reader's attention on notable people and events in the fatherland, the collection and analysis the news from the Caucasus Line, the posting the live responses of contemporaries which visited the Mineral Waters, the profound research work of scientists on the properties of healing - springs the journal has a unique color.
Analysis the publications in the «Otechestvennye zapiski» allows us to state that the activities of the edition in the 1820s contributed not only to the collection, study and broadcasting of relevant information about the population of the North Caucasus, but also contributed to the preservation of historical sources
